Una adaptación de un cuento de Mikhailo Kotsyubinsky, un ucraniano escritor ejecutado en las purgas Estalinistas, pero rehabilitado en el año de 1955, en la que se prevé el ucraniano "poética del cine" de los años '60 en su enfoque en el star-crossed lovers y su celebración de la naturaleza. Ambientada en la década de 1830, la película sigue a dos amantes en la ejecución de una niña obligada a casarse y a su novio, un siervo que está siendo buscado por las autoridades - a medida que tratan de hacer su camino a la libertad.
