Jane Fonda da una ganadora de un Emmy rendimiento como Gertie Nevels, un pionero de la mujer y la madre de cinco de las colinas de Kentucky que es forzada a desplazarse con sus hijos para seguir a su marido Clovis (Levon Helm) a Detroit cuando encuentra trabajo durante la II Guerra Mundial. Un revés sigue a otro y haciendo añicos la tragedia golpea a la familia. Es Gertie para encontrar una nueva fuerza, el coraje y la determinación para mantener a su familia unida y fuerte.
