Es Navidad 1183, y el Rey Enrique II (Peter O'Toole) tiene previsto anunciar su sucesor al trono. La lucha por la corona, sin embargo, es complejo. Henry tiene tres hijos y quiere a su hijo el Príncipe Juan (Nigel Terry) para tomar el relevo. La esposa de Henry, la Reina Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn), tiene otras ideas. Ella cree que su hijo el Príncipe Richard (Sir Anthony Hopkins) debe ser el Rey. Como la familia y varios conspiradores se reúnen para la fiesta, cada uno trata de hacer que el indeciso Rey elija su opción.
