Mavka, una ninfa de agua, ama Lukash, un país de jóvenes. Su breve felicidad termina cuando Lukash es obligada a casarse con el shrewish Kilina. El Espíritu del Bosque se convierte Lukash en un lobo como castigo por su infidelidad. La fuerza de Mavka del amor se rompe el hechizo, pero Kilina maldice a la ninfa, la transformación de ella en un sauce llorón. Esta hermosa y trágica historia está basada en una obra escrita en 1912 por Lesya Ukrainka, un ucraniano poeta, escritor y político, civil y militante, y que incluye a personajes mitológicos tomado del folklore ucraniano.
